Abstract

El Nino and the Southern Oscillation is by far the most striking phenomenon caused by the interplay of ocean and atmosphere. It can be explained neither in strictly oceanographic nor strictly meteorological terms. This volume provides a brief history of the subject, summarizes the oceanographic and meteorological observations and theories, and discusses the recent advances in computer modeling studies of the phenomenon.Key Features* Includes a comprehensive and up-to-date research survey* Discusses in detail sophisticated computer models* Provides a clear exposition

Abstract

"Intrinsic Clocks" presents an array of current research activities on intrinsic clocks and their contributions to biology and physiology. It elucidates the current models for the intrinsic clocks, their molecular components and key mechanisms as well as the key brain regions and animal models for their behavioral analysis. It provides a timely view on how these clocks guide behavior, and how their disruption may cause depressive-like behavior and impairment in cognitive functions. Thereby, any specific method by which the mood-related functions of the intrinsic clocks might be influenced bears therapeutic potential and has clinical interest. The importance of some of these mechanisms was highlighted by the 2017 award of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young for their discoveries of the genetic control of the daily biological rhythm. The key to the explanation was the discovery of transcription-translation feedback loops of the so-called “clock genes.”

Abstract

Despite increased knowledge, and more sophisticated experimental and modelling approaches, fundamental questions remain about how electricity can interact with ongoing brain function in information processing or as a medical intervention. Specifically, what biophysical and network mechanisms allow for weak electric fields to strongly influence neuronal activity and function? How can strong and weak fields induce meaningful changes in CNS function? How do abnormal endogenous electric fields contribute to pathophysiology? Topics included in the review range from the role of field effects in cortical oscillations, transcranial electrical stimulation, deep brain stimulation, modelling of field effects, and the role of field effects in neurological diseases such as epilepsy, hemifacial spasm, trigeminal neuralgia, and multiple sclerosis. The format of each (<1000 word) mini-review will begin by posing a question, problem, or challenge. The author(s) will provide a brief review of the literature and introduce essential concepts. Data regarding the outstanding question is presented, analysed, and issues of contention discussed thoroughly. The author should offer the reader an answer to the posed question if possible, and offer suggestions for future experiments to address outstanding issues.

Abstract

The book presents a systematic and compact treatment of the qualitative theory of half-lineardifferential equations. It contains the most updated and comprehensive material and represents the first attempt to present the results of the rapidly developing theory of half-linear differential equations in a unified form. The main topics covered by the book are oscillation and asymptotic theory and the theory of boundary value problems associated with half-linear equations, but the book also contains a treatment of related topics like PDE's with p-Laplacian, half-linear difference equations and

Abstract

Many climatic extremes around the globe, such as severe droughts and floods, can be attributed to the periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific sea surface, termed the El Niño or Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Advances in our understanding of ENSO, in which Edward Sarachik and Mark Cane have been key participants, have led to marked improvements in our ability to predict its development months or seasons, allowing adaptation to global impacts. The book introduces basic concepts and builds to more detailed theoretical treatments. Chapters on the structure and dynamics of the tropical ocean and atmosphere place ENSO in a broader observational and theoretical context. Chapters on ENSO prediction, past and future, and impacts introduce broader implications of the phenomenon. This book provides an introduction to all aspects of this most important mode of global climate variability, for research workers and students of all levels in climate science, oceanography and related fields.

Abstract

This monograph contains a study on various function classes, a number of new results and new or easy proofs of old results (Fefferman-Stein theorem on subharmonic behavior, theorems on conjugate functions and fractional integration on Bergman spaces, Fefferman's duality theorem), which are interesting for specialists; applications of the Hardy-Littlewood inequalities on Taylor coefficients to (C, α)-maximal theorems and (C, α)-convergence; a study of BMOA, due to Knese, based only on Green's formula; the problem of membership of singular inner functions in Besov and Hardy-Sobolev spaces; a full discussion of g-function (all p › 0) and Calderón's area theorem; a new proof, due to Astala and Koskela, of the Littlewood-Paley inequality for univalent functions; and new results and proofs on Lipschitz spaces, coefficient multipliers and duality, including compact multipliers and multipliers on spaces with non-normal weights. It also contains a discussion of analytic functions and lacunary series with values in quasi-Banach spaces with applications to function spaces and composition operators. Sixteen open questions are posed. The reader is assumed to have a good foundation in Lebesgue integration, complex analysis, functional analysis, and Fourier series. Abstract

This exposition of research on the martingale and analytic inequalities associated with Hardy spaces and functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) introduces the subject by concentrating on the connection between the probabilistic and analytic approaches. Short surveys of classical results on the maximal, square and Littlewood-Paley functions and the theory of Brownian motion introduce a detailed discussion of the Burkholder-Gundy-Silverstein characterization of HP in terms of maximal functions. The book examines the basis of the abstract martingale definitions of HP and BMO, makes generally available for the first time work of Gundy et al. on characterizations of BMO, and includes a probabilistic proof of the Fefferman-Stein Theorem on the duality of H11 and BMO.
